Position Summary:
The Forest GIS Specialist is responsible for managing and analyzing geographic information system (GIS) data related to forestry and land management. This role requires expertise in GIS technology and its application to forestry practices and environmental science. The Forest GIS Specialist works closely with cross-functional teams to support data-driven decision making and ensure efficient forest resource management.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and maintain accurate GIS databases for forest inventory, land use, and resource planning.
2. Utilize GIS software and tools to capture, analyze, and interpret forest-related geospatial data.
3. Collaborate with forestry professionals to integrate GIS data into forest management plans and strategies.
4. Generate maps, reports, and visualizations to communicate spatial analysis findings effectively.
5. Conduct spatial analysis to identify patterns, trends, and potential risks in forest ecosystems.
6. Assist in the development of GIS-based models and tools to support forest inventory, growth modeling, and resource allocation.
7. Stay updated on emerging GIS technologies, trends, and best practices in the field of forestry and environmental science.
8. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the accuracy and reliability of GIS data.
9. Provide technical training and support to team members regarding GIS data collection, analysis, and visualization.
10. Participate in field surveys and data collection activities to validate GIS data accuracy and quality.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree or higher in Forestry, Environmental Science, Geography, or a related field.
2. Strong proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and related tools.
3. In-depth knowledge of forest management principles, practices, and regulations.
4. Proficient in data management, spatial analysis, and cartographic techniques.
5. Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex spatial data sets.
6. Strong attention to detail and accuracy when collecting, recording, and validating GIS data.
7. Effective communication skills to convey complex GIS concepts and findings to diverse audiences.
8. Experience in utilizing remote sensing data and techniques for forest monitoring is preferred.
9. Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Python, R) and scripting for GIS automation is a plus.
10. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple projects concurrently.
